[ARCHIVED] Regional Drainage Study to Being in November

regional drainage study

Starting in November, an engineering firm hired by the City of League City will begin evaluating Clear Creek and Dickinson Bayou as part of a regional study to identify drainage issues and mitigation strategies for the two watersheds.

At their October 22 meeting, the League City Council gave final approval to proceed with a $1.29 million study which will be funded by League City and various municipal, county, and federal entities including Galveston County, Brazoria County, the Harris County Flood Control District, the Army Corps of Engineers, Friendswood, Webster, Dickinson, Nassau Bay and Pearland.

After Hurricane Harvey, the League City Council directed City Manager John Baumgartner to lead a regional effort to address flooding caused by elevated water levels along Clear Creek and Dickinson Bayou. League City worked with a consulting firm and the Army Corps of Engineers to develop the scope of work for the study, which is expected to take 18-months to complete.

Once complete, the study will identify and develop a comprehensive flood-control plan for both watersheds, which could eventually lead to the creation of more detention basins, the modification of drainage channels or to property buyouts in League City.  Once mitigation strategies are identified, League City hopes to be able to compete for federal funding allocated to the Texas General Land Office specifically for projects that will protect parts of Texas from future floods and hurricanes.
