[ARCHIVED] Big League Dreams Update

At the beginning of 2021, the League City Council voted to terminate the maintenance and operating agreement with Big League Dreams League City L.P. (BLD) and instructed City staff to close the city-owned sports facility because of deteriorating conditions.

Currently, the City is formally accepting proposals from parties interested in repairing the facility as well as operating, managing, and maintaining it moving forward.  Last month, the City’s Procurement team issued an RFP, or formal request for proposals. Recently, a mandatory pre-bid meeting and tour of the facility was held for representatives from four different parties. Proposals are due April 14.

Once all proposals are received, City staff will then rate each one and determine the best option. Staff will then work with the proposed bidder to develop a new operating agreement to present to Council for their consideration. Based on the current timeline, Council could consider and vote on a new agreement as early as June of 2020.

City staff estimate it will cost nearly two million dollars to make the necessary repairs so the facility can reopen. Over the past few years, annual inspections of the Big League Dreams facility by City staff indicated a growing number of upkeep and maintenance issues that needed be addressed by BLD as part of their operating and maintenance agreement with League City. During inspections in 2019 and 2020, City staff noted deteriorating conditions that went beyond basic maintenance and repair. After numerous attempts and conversations with BLD to make the required repairs, City Council voted in November of 2020 to declare them in default of the agreement and in January of 2021 Council voted to terminate the agreement with them.
