[ARCHIVED] Preparing for Arctic Front

Cold weather preparation

According to the National Weather Service, an arctic front will pass through our area late Wednesday into Thursday.  We can expect cold weather (lows in the 20s, wind chills in teens) Thursday night and Friday night. While cold, this is not comparable to the Winter event last February in either strength or duration.

League City Public Works is actively working on all applicable precautionary measures for the forecasted freeze conditions, this includes all water and wastewater facilities, road and bridge safety, fleet fuel, and manpower scheduling should conditions require overnight staffing.

Preparation efforts include but are not limited to the following:

  • Winterizing WWTPs and Lift Station sites
  • Winterizing Water production facilities including instrumentation protection
  • Topping off all standby generator fuel
  • Topping off the two 1,000 gallon fuel trailers recently purchased as a result of WS Uri.
  • Verifying Chat Rock inventory for road and bridge use
  • New Chat rock spreader is ready for service
  • Scheduling bulk fuel storage top off along with advance notification of additional fuel delivery if required.
  • Scheduling staff for ride-out as needed based on severity of freeze conditions
  • Prepping small generators for traffic signal power if needed

To prepare for the freezing temperatures, residents are encouraged to follow the 4 Ps:

Plants: tropical and sensitive vegetation will need to be protected from the cold as temperatures will be at levels and for long enough durations to cause damage.

Pipes: Any exposed outside pipes need to be protected and sprinkler systems shut off and pipes drained. Pipes at water wells and livestock ponds need to be protected. Inside wall pipes on most houses will be find with the current forecast

Pets: pets and livestock should be secured in proper shelter. Water supplies may freeze over.

People: make sure heaters are in proper working order. Do not use grills or stoves to heat houses and make sure space heaters have proper clearance.

Watch the video below to learn how to shut off and drain your irrigation system to prevent the water from freezing. If a pipe breaks in your home, you need to shut off the water from the main shut off valve outside the house. If you have a pipe break outside your home, please call the City at 281-554-1390

Staying Prepared

Since Winter Storm Uri, League City has made several additional purchases to assist with cold weather preparation:

  • Purchased two 1,000 gallon fuel tankers that will make it easier to fuel generators, if the power goes out, to keep our water and wastewater facilities running without any interruptions.
  •  Purchased more small generators to run traffic signals, should the power go it.
  •  Purchased new machine to spread “chat rock” on roadways should icy conditions exist.
  •  Applied for federal grant for seven large capacity generators to run City facilities during a power outage—such as the Library and Hometown Heroes, which could serve as warming centers if we needed them
