[ARCHIVED] Don’t Mow Your Water Meter!

water meter antenna

Over recent months, the Utility Billing department has noticed a rise in damaged water meter antennas at residents’ homes. Most often this damage is caused when someone inadvertently mows over the antenna with a lawn mower. These antennas wirelessly transmit data to the Utility Billing department, allowing them to read your meter and accurately track your water usage. More than 1,300 antennas have been damaged this year.

When a water meter antenna is damaged, it needs to be replaced immediately. As soon as the damage is discovered in our system, a meter technician is deployed to replace it. If your antenna is replaced due to damage, you will see a $30 fee added to your water bill to cover the cost of replacement.

To avoid extra fees from a damaged water meter antenna, it is recommended that you use a weed eater, rather than a lawnmower, to trim the grass around the water meter. The antenna is often very low to the ground and looks more like a flat, round disc than a traditional antenna. Due to its low profile, it can be easily overlooked. If you use a landscaping company, instruct them to avoid mowing over the meter antenna.
